Kidney dialysis firm DaVita Healthcare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) surged over 10% to US$67.16 in early deals in New York.

It came after UnitedHealth Group Inc said it would pay shy of US$5bn for DaVita's medical unit and combine it with its Optum division as it expands into ambulatory care delivery.

DaVita Medical Group operates 300 clinics and six outpatient surgical centers in six states – Florida, California, Colorado, Washington, Nevada and New Mexico.

"I am so proud of the DaVita Medical Group accomplishments, including our excellent clinical outcomes," said Kent Thiry, DaVita chairman and CEO. "The combination of DaVita Medical Group and Optum should lead to even higher levels of performance."

Later in the session, DaVita shares added over 13% to stand at US$69.17 each.
